Day x of a new life

From a fortune cookie, I got at the Chinese lunch buffet.

It has been three months since I set foot in Canada - since I left our house since I left my job since I started a life of my own - literally.

There are a lot of questions being asked to me like how did I come here, how much did I shell out for this.

Coming here is a long process, you may opt to have a consultancy or you can do it on your own. The official website of the Canadian immigration is very comprehensive enough that you can do the application on your own.
But for the expenses, here is a quick summary: 1. IELTS (approx P10k), WES(approx P13k), Application fee of $550, Right of Permanent Residence Fee of $490, medical (approx P10k) and a settlement fund that you must bring upon entering Canada to aid you with your settlement ($12,300) which around a total of at least P550k.

Maple leaf I picked from Odell Park.

My life here felt slow-paced in a snap - very simple and serene. I had time to think and reflect about my life not just during short breaks at work and a cup of coffee. With the simple life here, I am filled with contentment. For now, as long as I am surviving, I don’t think I need to step up, get frustrated and spend money on not so important stuff. Now, I’m copying a word that Debbie Reynolds taught her daughter Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) - SurThrive. It is a combination of surviving and thriving. As I quote her at HBO’s Bright Lights tribute episode, “The only way to get through life is to fight”. And I had to do the same.

In order to survive, I need to have an income. Aside from looking for work, I started baking and get paid with that. I learned the hard way when it came to job hunting. I was eyeing for jobs similar to what I had when I was in the Philippines. I used to be a Project Leader of multiple projects and have been doing maintenance and support works since I started working with the company. I never had an interview in a different company other than my previous company. Here in Canada, it was a good 4 or 5 interviews from different companies before landing a job - as a barista - a very far cry from my last work experience. And I also got a full-time job as a Technical Support Specialist - another far cry from my line of work. But who cares, I am grateful to the people who hired me because, without them, I will forever feel that I am not trustworthy. I have been feeling down since I was not able to get a job that I used to do. I felt no one wants me in their company. But you know, sometimes, no matter how hard we try not to, the anxiety comes from the picture in our brain on how things must be. But good things come to those who PATIENTLY wait. I’m stressing the word patiently as it is the key to a stress-free wait.

*Let us go back to the first photo in this post*

I won’t add a lecture about how good your resume or cover letter must look - we are all different especially in terms of work experience and stuff I don’t totally understand - and I think that’s fine. Just apply for as many jobs as you can :)

What am I doing to not get bored or homesick? I don’t really know. Most of the things I do are unplanned. Aside from job hunting and baking, I do calligraphy works mainly for home/apartment decorating and yes I usually am facing my laptop Pinteresting for DIY home decorating inspirations, watching movies I missed all my life, a few professional development review like Scrum, Android, Python and then I enrolled myself to a Management Essentials course just to get myself going and then a continuation to my French classes.

Got this fortune cookie yesterday at the National Code Day 2017 event with Ladies Learning Code which made me think of blogging again. HAHA! This isn’t even a well structured one, just a quick realization of things or life in general.

PS: No something red photos for long since I can’t get an adaptor for my battery charger :))
